MacRumors user forums hacked; 860,000 user details stolen
The MacRumors user forums' database has been appropriated by hackers, who have likely obtained information on all 860,000 users of the site. Information available to the thieves include hashed passwords, MacRumors forum usernames, and email addresses of users, according to Editorial Director Arnold Kim. Users of the MacRumors forum are advised to change the password to their MacRumors account, as well as any other accounts on other sites using the same password.

Kim reported that the data theft was caused by "a moderator account being logged into by the hacker who then was able to escalate their privileges with the goals of stealing user login credentials." An investigation by MacRumors staffers is underway.

The MacRumors user forums are populated not only by regular readers of the site, but also by one-time users having difficulty with an Apple-oriented technical matters. Some users of the forums have reported phishing attacks, and attempts at using credentials on other sites, such as Gmail.

Very sad to hear and I hope you make a better investigation than others...
I don't want to add insult to injury but hope I can teach a very good practice with email-adress privacy and sequirity: Register an email alias pointing to your real adress whenever you register an account or before going to an expo etc. Then you can remove the alias whenever you want and register a new one pointing to your real email adress in case of problems. It's also a very good idea to hand out an alias to your family who you think might send you *post casrds* at hollidays. As soon as you start getting spam you delete the alias and tell them you have a new one because of what happened.
