DollyDrive 2 arrives, revamps Mac-centric cloud backup service
The Mac-centric online backup service DollyDrive has updated its Mac application to version 2.0, bringing Mavericks support and an entirely new user interface to the program, which acts as an interface to the DollyDrive cloud-based service. The company, named after the first cloned sheep, offers automatic and encrypted backup of user files to a minimum 10GB space (free) up to multiple terabytes of space if required.

The new app offers a new icon set and overall "look and feel" along with a new help file PDF, support for folder and file exclusions (that are now static in nature) and the resolution of a host of issues, including used space request problems, disconnection procedures issues, any syncing of removable device flaws. By default, the service is set to back up users' iPhoto libraries, iMovie projects and iTunes libraries, but can be customized to sync only the items requested by the user.

The unlimited versioning is a rare feature that allows users to retrieve any previous version of any file synced with the service -- similar in purpose to Apple's Time Machine software, which backs up to external drives but only backs up boot drives. DollyDrive can also be used to create a bootable clone of a given hard drive, another unusual feature for a cloud storage service. A "family" package (free) offers backup to up to 10 Macs in a household, with users only paying for the amount of space needed.

Standard backup plans start with 250GB of space for $10 a month (or $96 per year, saving $24) up to 2TB for $55 per month (or $516 per year). Business and larger-capacity plans are also available. The company offers a free 14-day trial with 100GB of space, and uses 256-bit AES encryption on all backups as well as free iOS apps for managing and syncing data.
