Apple TV software update adds new iCloud Family Sharing functionality
A new feature discussed at the Worldwide Developer's Conference has appeared in the first beta of the iOS 8 version of Apple TV softwre, released on Tuesday. The new feature is the iCloud-based Family Sharing function, which allows up to six family members to access purchased iTunes content from any of the registered devices in the household running OS X 10.10 Yosemite or iOS 8, both of which will be released this fall. The change allows a household to access everyone's media purchases without changing accounts.

The function relies on iCloud streaming of content rather than AirPlay, which would require some configuration to change source devices and establish new connections. The feature only works with the latest, third-generation Apple TVs during the beta, a condition that may remain in force when the final release is available to the public. The new beta also utilizes the "flatter" icon style seen in iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite.

According to the beta notes, there are some issues with the feature at present, including stuttering video or incomplete streaming. For just-purchased music videos, the Apple TV unit may crash and return to the main menu, notes AppleInsider. As reported earlier, Apple on Tuesday also issued the second iOS 8 beta, which notably includes Quicktype support and makes the Podcasts app an integrated system app rather than an add-on.
