Finder hangs
Hello -

lately
I have to start the Finder with an extra click; it doesn't come up by itself
opened folders seem to be empty
The Finder hangs when I make a sub-folder or change its name
There are hang reports but I don't understand them

Extensions? Posssibly not.
Starting with the shift key: No Finder

Deleting
com.apple.finder.plist
Finder.Preinstall.plist

didn't help.

What else could I do?

Sounds like some sort of corrupted files. Do you have a backup you could restore from?

In any case, start by going to Disk Utility to verify your startup disk.

The backups are younger than the problem.

Done already several times.

Yes but I don't see how to add an attachment.
270 kb would be a bit much to add it to this text.

270KB sounds like the entire log file. We probably only need the last 30-50 lines, which you could paste into a post.

A corrupted file on your Desktop or in one of the open folders could cause this, as the Finder (QuickLook actually) tries to render icon previews. The logfile might point out which file is responsible.

In the meantime, can you reach System Preferences? If so, create a new account, and set login to boot into the new one. If things work normally with the alt account, we've just confirmed it's a problem in your user folder.

It's added.
It's some days old as I have learned to work around.
I tried with another account and now with a new account.
In both cases not only no Finder but also no menu.

The logfile extract didn't work as well as I'd hoped.

From your description, the problem isn't in your user folder. Since it affects other accounts, it's something screwed up at the OS level. What version of OS X are you running? My next step would be to manually apply the most recent combo update for your version of OS X. Followed by a permissions repair, though that has done less and less with each OS version.

Other possible causes - do you have any external drives attached? Not the new Time Machine drive, but any from before. Including network volumes you routinely mount. A messed up extra volume would trip up the Finder in any account.

I already ran the combo update as well as repeated permissions repair.
Startup is without external drive(s). They are connected later.

If you can get to the System Preferences, see what happens when you disable TCPBlock.

Also worth asking: Do you have MacFUSE installed? You have VirtualBox, so it's not unlikely that an old version of MacFUSE might be installed from previous cross-platform experiences.
MacFUSE makes OS X file management systems unhappy since 10.7. Very unhappy. It hasn't had any support for about four years, so you can't blame it for throwing a tantrum, but it does need to be gently euthanized.

Has Sophos AV found and put any files on quarantine.?
Maybe the Finder hangs when trying to access or back up (Time Machine) a "quarantined" file.

I would remove Sophos AV, though.

I suggest an OS reinstall, preserving users + groups + network settings.

It would be interesting to narrow down the exact cause, but there's no obvious payoff for doing so, and your time is worth something. Having tried for the easier solutions, do the big one and get back to normal.

I suggested reapplying the latest Combo update because it replaces many files (which might fix whatever file is corrupted) and it's safe & quick to apply. But that didn't work.

So my suggestion now is a full OS reinstall. Use your install discs (if you have them) or boot into Apple's recovery partition. Select the options to preserve users / groups / network settings. This is usually the default choice in later OS installers. Your existing apps will get preserved too, no need to worry about them.

An OS reinstall will take longer, and replace the whole operating system. This will wipe the slate of the problem. A few applications that install files within the OS may need to be reinstalled themselves afterwards, but most apps won't even notice the change.

I did the Reinstall via Internet.
It worked; the Finder appears.
I still do not understand why the Combo update didn't work.
Now Safari crashes and I have to solve that.
