Do you mean the cursor doesn't sit still? Have you cleaned out the sensor area?

Are you using it on a wood grain tabletop?

Fine grain will confuse the mouse.

If the battery swells up on a laptop, it can press on the underside of the trackpad. That can cause the mouse pointer to wander.

i have a basic wired trust mouse which has proved very good until now

Well, that's at least easy to check. Try with another mouse, unplugging the current one. If the wobble goes away, it's hardware.
