You do not need to install any software to read PDF files on a Mac.

Uninstall Reader and see if that helps.

Are they downloading and just not showing?

that pdf opens for me in firefox first, then I can click download, and it opens fine in Preview. (I have several versions of acrobat installed, so that shouldn't be a conflict to Preview working well.)

it is a large PDF though, 13mb. maybe your internets are slow?

what os is your new imac? maybe preview works differently in 10.8?
