Accidental In-App Purchases
So I was reading this story:

Policeman Doug Crossan reports his 13-year-old son Cameron for FRAUD after running up a 3,700 bill on his iPad | Mail Online

There have been a couple of these recently but this one gets no sympathy from me whatsoever. There was a really young kid who racked up a bill over £1000 and Apple stumped for it, fair enough. This kid however is 13 and according to his dad is "studious and sensible". A studious and sensible 13-year-old would have been in no doubt whatsoever that he was spending money playing that game. He would have to have some kind of learning difficulty to not realise exactly what he was doing (and the Daily Fail would have been all over that in a second if it were the case).

I'm not keen on his old man's actions either. Yes it sucks to lose that much money, but he wouldn't expect a refund if the kid had been calling porn lines, he would expect a bill if the kid had destroyed goods to that value in a store, intent is not always relevant. Sometimes you have to just take it on the chin. This guy is wasting police time in an effort to guilt someone else in to paying for his kid's mistake. Apple will almost certainly cave sooner or later which is a bit of a shame. Let the little f***er get arrested and dragged through court a bit, then wipe the bill and have his dad charged with wasting police time or at least saddled with the legal fees.

The police are not there to help you blackmail multinational corporations because you weren't smart enough to keep an eye on your credit card or your child. He ought to get in some trouble for this IMO.

I was under the impression all in-game purchases required you to click Yes or No and listed the amount of the IAP? how could that possibly be confused?

Like I say, the kid cannot possibly have spent any money at all without realising he was spending money. Maybe he didn't know his dad had put a credit card on it and thought it was a glitch, but he absolutely must have known it was supposed to cost money.

There should be a a second of your account settings for your Apple ID that specifically turns off in app purchasing, one that needs a second password to bypass even.

Yes the kid probably did know he was spending money but kids (even up to 13) are ridiculously bad at connecting immediate actions with future consequences.

There's a restriction lock for in-app purchases.

Yep, and I use it on all of my devices. Apple shouldn't be blamed for this.

Here's a fun story. A few years ago, (while my TV was off) my then 1 year old picked up an Xbox 360 controller, hit the big center round X button to turn on the xbox, then hit the "A" button three times. He then, (again, with the TV off) ended up purchasing a $99 family pack of Xbox Live for a year.

It was really just that easy.

I got an email thanking me for my purchase and was able to fix it right away by calling them, but it's still pretty crazy that that's even possible.

I was there when he did it. The TV was off.

He was like 14 months at the time. He wasn't saying much.

He was just repeating what he did with the TV on while you weren't looking.

At least, that's what he told me.
