AT&T to chase Google Fiber with its own gigabit internet in Austin | The Verge

Quote
Not long after Google announced that its gigabit internet service would be coming to Austin, Texas, AT&T has followed up with its own announcement: it intends to build a competing high-speed fiber optic network that could also reach gigabit speeds. AT&T says the expansion is part of a larger operation called Project VIP, a long-term upgrade program from 2012 that largely involves building out LTE and expanding the reach of its current broadband offerings.

AT&T is smoking their own crack if they think they can compete head-to-head with Google.

They should have done it someplace with no competition.

Man, what a letdown. I read the title and thought maybe Dakar got some live ammo in his Amazon order.

Agreed. I doubt they will compete with price, and for sure can't compete with customer service.

The big irony is Google's customer service is a ****ing Python script, and is still better than AT&T.

It should be noted this is a cleverly phrased announcement that in actuality says, "Hey we'll roll out the fiber if we get the same deals as google." They apparently did the same thing in Kansas City and never got anywhere.

AT&T already had a deal. It was called the 1996 Telecommunications Act. It was a much, much larger, and much, much better deal than Google ever had.
