Favorite Late Night Talk Show Host
Who is your favorite late night talk show host?

I am currently testing a theory, inexplicably refuted by ratings, that everyone on earth hates Leno.

Shaddim Jun 15, 2013 02:09 PM
He's Craig Ferguson, it's a C not a G. Leno's my pick.

subego Jun 15, 2013 04:10 PM
Johnny Carson.

I hate Leno. His voice is annoying as fk. To me he's the exact opposite of late night entertainment.

Shaddim Jun 15, 2013 07:53 PM
Being a petrolhead probably makes me a little biased.

nothing against leno personally, but his jokes seem stale.

I don't watch as much late night as I used to, but I see clips and Conan, Craig, and Fallon are the funniest.

I've never been especially taken by talk shows. I watch for the guest rather than the host and nowadays you don't get much of interest from the guest other than 'Buy my new book' or 'Watch my new film' etc etc.

Most hosts are largely interchangeable.

That said, Graham Norton didn't make your list? ;)

Craiggers....and not Ferguson, but Kilborn.

Are they still called "chat shows", or is that only the daytime format?

I always liked that more than "talk show".

I just happened to recall a Bill Hicks routine it's Leno interviewing Joey Lawrence.

Leno becomes so disgusted with himself he pulls out an Uzi.

I don't remember if Leno murders Lawrence and then sticks the Uzi in his own mouth, or just sticks it in his own mouth. I think it's the former. I recall lots of sound effects. It's really more of a dramatic reenactment than a routine.

Bill was an angry man.

When you live on hate you don't usually last very long.

Pretty sure it wasn't the hate that got him.

(I don't think it was the lizards either.)

I don't think any of them are "must see tv" as carson was. It is now a formula, and even the good ones get repetitive. After the Save Conan campaign, I tuned in again regularly for a few weeks. It was enjoyable, but not necessary viewing.

I tend to watch/seek out clips of favorite actors etc, and the fun ones are where they don't follow the "my new movie is awesome" script, but just sit and schmooze, tell funny stories, and do skits.

Things each host is good at:

Kimmel : snark, usually mean or crude.

Conan: snark, oddball. Physical humor.

Fallon: love his musical bits, and his skits don't seem as mean as Kimmel.

Craig F: he loves Dr. Who, and seems the most laid back and self-deprecating. He goes charmingly off script.

:\

Bill wasn't hateful, he was angry.

You may have noticed there's shit worth getting angry about.

Johnny Carson.
Steve Allen.

You just dated yourself, son!

That said, Carson is the example they all aspire to.

Stephen Colbert should be an option. None of the guys in the poll are funny.

Anger can be useful, if you can focus it towards fixing the issue that made you angry. Otherwise, wallowing in it only makes matters worse.

I like his Jay's Garage clips on youtube much more than his style on late night.

I may be 'old' but I got to see all the great bands!

Also Dick Cavett was very good. Joey Bishop...not so much.
Letterman hasn't been funny, just bitter since Carson picked Leno to take over.
Furguson is funny, and about the only late night show I would watch.
Did you know that Steve Allen had Frank Zappa on his show? Frank played a bicycle(musically).

Steve Allen show, Frank Zappa Playing music on a Bicycle 1963 - YouTube
