Using a switch with Airport Express

I have been using an airport express unit for a while now without any issues. I now have an XBOX that requires a ethernet connection because the XBOX does not have a wifi card. Of course the airport express does not have an ethernet out port, so i decided to borrow a Linksys 5 port switch from a friend and connect the switch to my cable modem, then route two cords from the switch to the XBOX and airport express unit.

The XBOX works just fine through the switch, but I can't get my airport express router to connect. It is unable to find an IP address.

As you can imagine, this is frustrating because each time I want to play XBOX I have to disable my wifi network.

Does anyone know how to get the following to work: Cable modem>switch>XBOX and Airport Express?

This will not work. You need a router not a switch.

Get a wifi router and toss the Airport Express.

Or get a USB wifi adapter for your xbox.

It will work if your cable modem can offer network address translation (NAT,) in other words: if your modem can act as a router. If you can enable it in the modems web interface then you will need to access airport utility and switch the Airport express to bridge mode.
