Ok, well the reinstall worked at least, I'm back to 10.4.8 with all my files and apps and such in place, right where I left them before the hang. Bit of a waste of a day, but at least I didn't lose...

Same problem here. Tried Disk Repair with install DVD and no change. Tried Safe Boot, waited ages, no love. Am making a disk image in Disk Utility now to an external drive I've manage to borrow. ...
