You can get rid of the swap file. I've done that a few times with no ill effect. Keep the sleep image, though. You may have to log in as root to do that with OmniDiskSweeper.

I use OS X because it works seamlessly to get all my work done. I don't need to fiddle around with the os underpinnings. If someone wants to, they can just drop into Terminal and work from the the CL.
