Try zappinf the pram by holding command-option-p-r as you startup. Also, try a pmu reset by pressing shift-ctrl-option-power, then starting up.

If you have spent in the $2000 range on a new powerbook, it's defintiely worth it to spend a little on some kind of protective case. Even if you bought a used one for much less, it's still worth it....

The processor setting is strictly energy-related. If you are running on a battery and just web browsing, I would set it to 'lowest,' and dim the screen a little, if you are looking for extended life.
