The MacBooks dissipate heat through the bottom, so having the lid closed doesn't affect anything. The only thing it might affect is the life of your screen (by prolonging it :P).

The only way it could be trying access the sleep file is with the RAM. I'm not sure if the sleep file is saved in RAM at all though, I think it's written to the hard drive. So it doesn't make sense...
