these can be edited in individual schemes relatively easily.
don't think it can be done as a generic setting for all schemes...

make sure that the gradient is merged down into the correct layer.
either
build the layer in a seperate doc, flatten it, then copy-paste...

Keep that 'too small' icon for the 48x48 size and below.
I tried blowing it up... keeping the dropshadow area within the icon and it upsized without too much loss. Just a little 'unsharp mask'...
