Mines' down from four to three, but I think it's just reporting more accurately. Pre-Panther I'd see four bars almost to the point when the connection would drop altogether - this seems to match up...

None of this makes sense from a constrainment...

Clearance is one thing, you also have to provide power to the things; I don't think the correct voltage comes from a SATA bus. All the adapters I've seen use a separate "standard" power connector.
