I installed the latest Beta version (10.10.4) and the problems disappeared. I don't know what it was about 10.10.3 but either my system or an application really didn't like it.

Seems OK now.

Resetting the SMC as Spheric Harlot suggested looked like an easy thing to do, so I did it. I expected nothing. I plug in the FireWire drive (with a different cable)...
