Actually you can boot an iBook G4 from (some) USB disks or Flash drives.

The short story is to Boot in Open Firmware, "devalias", look for "ud", and
"setenv boot-device ud:<disknumber\\:tbxi".

I found a Mac OS X USB Driver for the Via Technology Chipset!

It's made a big difference. It will actually run & power a USB drive connected directly to the PCI card!

In my new Quicksilver there's space along the bottom of the case for like six drives; three pairs. Add an ATA133 PCI card with two master&slave cable ports and you've got it!
