Yes, that is normal.... the widescreen is mainly for the extra screen real estate.

It does make for better DVD viewing though. With the extra screen width, the widescreen movies can be viewed...

I have one of these, and wouldn't recommend it (or any FM transmitter) unless you live in a rural area where there are actually some open radio frequencies. In a big city you'll have a tough time...
