I have had a 20" iMac since November 03 with no problems with the display. Just a stoke of bad luck I think. After repair or replacement you should be good to go.

I've had my 20" iMac for about that long too. Mine's working fine. If you can't seem to wake it up, power it down by holding the power button for at least 5 seconds. This should force shut it down....
