Apparently there is an open source C++ wrapper for Carbon called nano (http://www.refnum.com/products/nano/) it has a BSD license. Looks pretty interesting and uses xcode.

shouldn't the comparison be to windows vista not xp, because vista has more of the features of OSX incorporated into it.

OS9 is pendatically faster than OSX, not including full system lock-ups...
