Sounds more like an issue with the temp sensor which is taped to your heatpipe (which cools the cpu/gpu/io-bridge). That sensor drives the fans, not the cpu-temp which smcFanControl reads out.

I noticed it too from when I upgraded from a G4 15" to my MBP matte. I thought it was part of an effect of the higher density of the screenpixels, so I didn't bother.

Never been bothered with it,...

it doesn't install the trackpad drivers for me as well, after trying manually even. A shame, because Windows irritates me after just a few minutes because of this :)

why would an application be 64bit only? that would be ridiculous. I don't know any app now that needs 2Gb of ram for itself, so I think 4Gb as a minimum is a long way off still...

random restarting is most certainly bad ram. even programs as memtest won't find errors, but you'll see that going back to the store and have your ram replaced is the fix.

I have the same problem. some months later one of my ram slots is failing so I think it has something to do with that.

I think you should install the latest CHUD tools (download from versiontracker).
CHUD enables a 'CPU-icon' in your System Preferences in which you can enable NAP.
NAP should be enabled by default,...

not the iFeel, just a standard optical. Just replaced it with a MX500 though, because the mouse was hiccuping.
I like the MX500's buttons, Expose with the mousebuttons rocks :D

I think you are talking about different things. The sound which is responsible for the 'hard drive like ticking when connected to the outlet' is the so called NAP function.

NAP is a power saving...

I just bought the very same laptop configuration. It works rather splendidly. I don't know about UT2004 though, as I play it on my windows desktop. I say, just keep your old PC just somewhere hidden...
