That's true...

But I am still wondering why everything on Linux seems to be dependent on something else, while on OSX I don't really ever think of it.

I don't know about that. But I certainly have the problem when using VPC/XP that System Preferences tell me that there is another firewall running so I am not able to change the settings on the OSX...

I have had similar problems. I cannot say that Mail is not saving every tenth mail, but it certainly is deleting some of my sent mails. Have no idea what is going on though.
