I recently bought a G3 iMac, 500mhz, slot-loading, 256mb, 20gb...It didn't have any OS so I installed Linux on it. I would like to put Tiger on it but I've read it needs OS9 to upgrade firmware.

You wouldn't have a retail version of OS9? I just bought a G3 iMac (m5521) model and would like to install Tiger but I've read it needs OS9 to upgrade the firmware. No OS came with it.

If it's formatted with NTFS filesystem, OS X can't write to it by default. You would need to get 'ntfs-3g' or another 3rd party driver for write access.
