Try to disconnect any third party hardware/remove additional memory. If you still get a kernel panic, try to reinstall the iBook. If it still fails after this, it's a hardware problem.

Yes, the difference is huge. LED display on the MacBook Pro is way better. Notice that the MacBook will probably get a LED display for the next revision (same as MacBook Air).
