Re: Using Xll 623 Views / 2 Replies
The best source for X11 applications is fink (http://fink.sourceforge.net), which is an application that finds, downloads, and installs Unix apps automatically. At macupdate.com you can find a nice...

Re: MySQL install on OSX has lead to major problems. PLease Help... 551 Views / 2 Replies
There are a few other things you can try.

1. You've tried correcting permissions; but did you also try disk utility? (Or, what amounts to the same thing, fsck? Command-s at start up, and enter...

You don't need to worry about the bug. It only effects those who use fink to build programs from source code. Obviously, if you don't have the developer tools installed, you haven't been doing that.

Re: KDE Newbie: Useful Apps? 1,001 Views / 8 Replies
It's not just KDE apps that can be useful in XWindows. There's the XDarwin version of Mozilla, which is faster than OS X Mozilla and (at least on my system) doesn't hog 5 to 10% of CPU when running...

Re: is linux on xfree86 smart? 790 Views / 6 Replies
I'm not sure what is meant by installing Linux through xfree86. Xfree86 is a Unix/Linux GUI.

If you don't want to "repartition," forget about Linux and install xfree86 instead. It will run...

Re: Yellow Dog or Mandrake? 775 Views / 5 Replies
I've tried both YD and Mandrake on an iMac 333. I had trouble with the Mandrake: the screen kept flashing on and off. YD was easy to install and worked, but it was slow and displayed poorly on...

Re: KDE / Fink 543 Views / 8 Replies
Fink does work in 10.2 -- although whether it will compile KDE is another question. I've found that all the XWindows stuff runs great in OS 10. Better, in any case, than when I tried it in YDL.

I can't agree with those who find something unethical in Apple's using Watson like capabilities in Sherlock 3. Apple is merely adding features to their operating system. What is wrong with that? If...

There's a command-line program called "mkiosfs" that will do the trick. If you have fink, you can install it by installing the cdrtools. Then place all all the files you want as part of your disk...

I've never done any actual video editing, but I've worked in the industry and shot dozens of videos. The professional video editors I know overwhelmingly favor the Mac. Yes, you can get a very fast...

I've run Mac OS X and Linux w/KDE on an iMac 333 and have noticed no huge difference in speed. KDE makes a lot of demands on the computerr, and file browsing can be even slower than in Mac OS X. ...

It looks like you don't have the developer tools installed. Install the developer tools and give it another try. Also: have you ever used fink to install unix apps? Fink, especially if combined...

For those who aren't afraid of the terminal, gnut is an excellent alternative, much faster than the Limewire or other graphical programs. And really not hard to use at all--nearly as easy as the...

Perhaps its an illusion, but I do find that XDarwin runs noticeably faster if its started out of console mode. I know it shouldn't do so, but there it is. I type "xinit" to get in from console. ...

What has been said here about Apple not allowing OS X to run on any hardware they have no proprietary control over is quite true, not merely because hardware is where the money is, but also because...

Gimp should be able to use those formats. I use Gimp for jpgs all the time. Maybe it has something to do with your installation (though I doubt it). Installing with Fink, I've had no trouble with...
