I find the way OS X manages memory very elegant. Only do things when you need to. Give the user a good chance that things are still in the cache so you get better responsiveness.

Fair enough. Since losing data is not an issue for you, why don't you delete whatever is left of the old mailbox, create a brand new one and be done with this problem? It's space and time efficient.
