I resolved it. It was flashing because of the color setting 'force xterm 256color'. Changed it back to 'use-termdef' and the flashing stopped.

Hey, it looks like an upgrade to 10.5.3 fixes the isub problem. You will still need USB speakers connected, but at least I have decent sound coming out of my imac again!
