Right, probably the XP firewall will cause problems, so if you're already behind a firewall, just turn it off, otherwise configure the firewall to accept incoming requests from the mac's ip address

what you must have first and for all is a crossed cable. This is a network cableto connect to computers without hub or so.
This cable typically has red plugs.
