If I open the Desktop Folder in my home directory it displays all the files I have on my desktop. I am of the firm believe that it is the same folder actually. The desktop is just like any other...

It's a virtual representation of a harddisk, (or cd or any mountable media ) in vpc it's used as the pcs harddisk with the system and apps in it. If you read the manual maybee you will understand ;)
