sure vm increases performance, if you are running with under 256 MB ram. But I've found (for my personal needs) with 512MB of Ram I get more speed and better performance with vm off.

9.1 ram usage usually hovers around 72 MB

with vm on it is half of that, around 35-40 MB
but I always have vm off because of the significant performance...
