Since I posted this I fixed it! It was something quite simple, all I needed to do was make sure after I finished that I then Disabled Root User. No more extra login now and my user name is changed...

To fix this modem I did 3 steps, upgraded to 10.4.11, upgraded the firmware and also changed a setting re the modem name (listed in my above post). Anyway I've since had problems...
