figured out that it was Toast's "DejaVu" that was doing the trick. i had it to backup at 3am (while i was gone).
i seem to remember that when i set that up, i was root.

not a very good setup....

recently when i return to work in the mornings, after logging out the night before, i find that my login screen has root's desktop behind it. its totally intereactive, i can launch apps as root, etc....

no, the idea is to keep desktop locked (as in, not writable). we're in a student environment, nobody cleans up after themselves. (i know we can trash the contents of the desktop nightly, etc.)
