For general desktop use, I would recommend Ubuntu Linux ... I installed it on my rev B iBook about a month ago and am happy with it. It runs much faster than OS X 10.2 (even with 320 MB of memory) -...

Let me just say, as the instigator of this thread, that I am COMPLETELY satisfied by what Apple has delivered with the Mac mini. As soon as I can swing it, there will be one in my home.

I find it interesting that Apple has made several "professional-market" announcements quietly, under the radar, today:

- reduction of price on Cinema Displays
- XSan is now shipping
- speed...

Great analysis. I would include one more category:

Mac users with old Macs that need retiring - it's interesting how many people are getting by with Macs that are five years or more old. A number...

My guess is that Apple will keep the eMac for education (with perhaps a price drop) because schools REALLY like the all-in-one concept. This "iMac mini" concept would not be a good school computer...

This is great news. I feel like dancing on my desk. :)

Just for giggles...I went back to a thread from August that I participated in regarding the "headless" iMac. Here's a post I did at that...

Actually, I'm intrigued about what the dual-core e600-based chips might be able to do for Apple in opening up, perhaps, a whole new product category.

These chips, with their "system-on-a-chip"...

Stupid question, but...here goes.....

Is there any way to software overclock an original blueberry G3 iBook?
I'd love to get things a bit "snappier" on that.

You know, it would be so great to compare this thread (and some others like it) to the avalanche of criticism leveled at the original iPod when Apple released it.

You know, what's funny is that, when the iPod first came out, the vast majority of opinion was that it was ugly, hardly groundbreaking, and that Apple had overhyped it. The amount of vitriol on the...

I'm not surprised, but I am disappointed. Not all of us have $1,300-1,500 to throw at a computer - that's double the entry-level price point of a Windows machine. And if the eMac gets pulled to make...

I concur with you about Apple's current position: they've decided not to compete at the $500 Winbox level - and that's their choice. I don't have to agree that it's the right one, though.

I'd recommend an upgrade to at least 10.2 if you can find it (on eBay, perhaps). I've used both 10.1 and 10.2 on a 300 mHz iBook, and there is a considerable difference.

Okay, we've established that the average MacNN forum poster could probably attach a monitor to a VESA mount. No argument there.

But the core audience of the...
