Did you try reseting the PRAM? It should boot from the DVD if you hold down the C key. Holding down the x key will start any OSX install. Command + S key will start up into single user mode. ...

Most likely just a corrupt Quark file save. I try not to Zip files I'm sending over the net tho, dmg works better. Also tell him to do a collect for output, instead of just copying the file.

I have the same drive and it did burn at only 8x. I did a firmware upgrade got Sony 16x DVD-R disks and it now burns at full 16x speeds.
