This is pretty generic (http://www.sonoma.edu/it/websupport/faq/mailto-gen.html) but it seems to support that there are cases when a mailto link won't work. Personally I find mailto links irritating...

I see the apple menu icon being the same size/shape as the normal aqua apple, except it would be filled with the same gradient you're using for the selected menu items/widgets

Changing finder icons under osx can be frustrating, sometimes they change, other times they won't.

Try Hide Itoh's Finder Icon contextual menu, it gets around the Finder's problem of new icons...
