Unfortunately my firewire drive is already indexed, so I can't test that volume, but a mounted server (unexamined acc. to mdutil) does respond to a simple file name search in the finder find window.

Awesome, thank you so much! I didn't know about the NameVirtualHost directive, so it was commented out. Uncommenting it did the trick!

You can't access the audio hardware from Classic in OS X, meaning you can't use premiere (well, adobe just announced an OS X version)... there are lots of free or cheap apps to record audio in X...
