I suspect it is the G5 "Black Screen of Death". I had the graphic card changed but it still did the same on DVI. It's ok with VGA dongle so putting up with fuzzier...

Yes it stays black until the machine has warmed up then a restart normally cures it. Had a new graphics card from Apple and that has not cured mine :(
