If you want to see a speed increase, I'd highly recommend looking into an SSD, did wonders to my 2008 MacBook Pro.

I'll investigate the old disk from ML tomorrow.

A disk check should fix that. Windows or the hard drives inbuilt firmware has probably marked a sector as bad, the /R flag should sort that.

If it's a silver Unibody - yes you can put DDR3 in it, otherwise you need DDR2.
