If you haven't done so, use the 10.3.3 combo update from apple's support site. A good number of update glitches get fixed by doing this.

AOL traffic is being block either on your router or you ISP for some odd reason. If you enabled any firewalling on your router, make sure port 5190 is open.

When you change the filename in the music folder .. you're just changing the filename. nothing else. iTunes is using ID3 tags and it's own DB to store the other information about the file.
