Add the 'source /sw/bin/init.csh ' into your .cshrc file not the file your using. Only do that if you are not using the bash shell.

I have never had this problem. I just had a clean install of X.1 then i installed the 10.0 Dev tools, then the 10.1 dev tools and everything works great for me...

Maybe it is because you are trying to enter part of your password using the keypad...XWindows doesn't see the keypad with the keymapping I use and I think we probably use the same one...
