My wife and I just saw A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. We were floored by it.
I'll start by saying that Fred Rogers has always been a hero of mine. His calling to help children understand the world through understanding and handling their own feelings struck a chord in me.
During the build up to the Gulf War, when my son was only 3, Mr. Rogers' shows about war, parents having to leave because of duty, and related issues, didn't just help children; they helped ME make sense of the riot of emotions I was feeling as someone who might just be sent to war.
Anyway, we were intrigued by the movie's trailer, and since we had the day off, we went. It was awesome. It is based, in part, on a 1998 Esquire magazine article on Mr. Rogers, but it goes beyond the article and gets to not only who Fred Rogers was, but what he was, and how he helped people.
No spoilers here. Just go see it.

I heard Hanks pimping this on the radio a few days ago.
He did an excellent job of making it sound interesting, but when they played the clip I couldn’t get past his Fred Rogers impression. It didn’t sound like Mr. Rogers, it sounded like everyone’s stock impression of Mr. Rogers.
My favorite of those? Duck’s Breath Mystery Theatre’s Sesame Street Blues, with Mr. Rogers as the SWAT commander.
“Tear gas... can you say ‘tear gas’?

There was a lot of work done to not portray Fred Rogers as a caricature. You're right - Hanks didn't sound like Fred Rogers. But he sounded more like him than a parody of Fred because of the content of what he said.

I’m guessing they chose the clip they did for that reason. It was specifically about why he does what he does, and the dialogue is deeply moving.
It was radio, though. All it has is the voice, which on its own is so hard to get past the caricature.
Maybe part of it is Hanks’ voice and speech patterns are really distinctive in their own right.
