Apple "Grab" to .jpg rather than TIFF?

Grab seems to like to make TIFF's
is there anyway to set the default to a .jpg?

Grab is a vestige of OpenStep that hasn't gotten an update (AFAIK) since 10.0. You can use the Mac screen shot combos instead. The default format for those is PNG but can be changed through Terminal. See this page:

I don't know of a way to change the default. I open the .tiff with Preview and change the format to .jpg when saving it. Extra steps ... but it works.

Instead of using grab, try using: Command + Shift + 4 + then select what you want to capture. It saves it in PNG format on your desktop.

Use Onyx. It has an option to select the image format.
