So I'm sitting watching Hook on Comedy Central +1 (UK) and being that christmas is imminent, every ad break seems to have at least 3 ads for perfume. I'm certainly not going to complain about Charlize Theron in a bath of gold paint but even the ads with redeeming features like that are woefully unimaginative and the others are often offensively crap.
How have ad execs been getting away with pitching this s**t to perfume makers for so long?

I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

If it works, it must be because any crap with the logo on it does the job. Again you'd think someone would have tried to do something a bit different or just a bit less s**t by now. Even the scripts could be easily bettered by half a dozen monkeys with typewriters.

Man, I really have to start reading the stuff in the Lounge more often. It really brightens up a gloomy day! [It's been nothing but cloudy and rainy for over a week]
Every perfume add is the same. It stars some celebrity or some beauty model. They're basically saying you can be like them, if you buy this perfume/cologne. And who wouldn't want to be like them or have a piece of what they have?

How is that different from beer commercials that tell guys they'll be studly chick magnets who are much more manly than anyone else just because they're holding (not drinking - they don't show that in US beer commercials) a particular brand of beer?

Not all perfume ads are dreadful. This magazine spread is way better than average.
If it works, it must be because any crap with the logo on it does the job.
The fragrance industry believes that aromatic aphrodisiacs exist and are only waiting to be found which would lead to a trillion dollar industry upon people fears and demons. If you look good you feel good, and if you feel good you look great. Lame but it just works.
SO START AN AD COMPANY AND PUT SOME SCRIPTS OUT THERE and make loads of money.
Hint for a great start: Sensory branding.
A subliminal scent (an odor at a concentration below the level of conscious detection) won't make you do something that you don't want to do, but if you can smell an odor, it can influence you. Scents used in the appropriate settings can sway your purchasing interest and your perception of the quality of a product. We have Disney to thank for it. Me wants Popcorn !!
How is that different from beer commercials that tell guys (…)
Maybe cause women don't believe in a man who smells too good because of his fragrance. If a woman happens to think some guy has potential and she is on the hunt for a man to be her mate, she is going to ask him to kick the fragrance habit for a while. If her nose and heart remain enamored, then she is on to something good.

Um, looks like she's more interested in the car than the guy she's with.
