Are there any videos? I've never seen any of the lightning associated with some volcanic eruptions.

It is snowing here today.

Be careful. Make sure you ban the volcano for all of the pollution it is putting out!

I'm gonna keep up my monologue a while longer just incase someone is interested but too shy to post

They can't tell at the moment if this will cause a glacier run but if it will come to that it will destroy large parts of the infrastructure built up after the last glacier run in '96 and that costs severely for a small nation like Iceland.

The glacier run '96 reached 46k cubic meters per second. We can compare that to the Potomac river that's 250 cubic meters per second IIRC, or the greatest river flow in the world, the Amazon. The Amazon is estimated to be about 200k cubic meters per sec.

So imagine 1/4th of all the water in the Amazon gushing out of a glacier and run over a lot less area than the Amazon does. Then you get an idea of how much of a disaster that can be.

Good luck with the water. That sounds a little worrisome. And keep us updated, I'm interested.

The last hour it's been growing stronger and the ash column is back up to 13km. They say it might send ash all the way to the coast of Norway. Thankfully they don't expect a disastrous flood this time. If the eruption is where they believe it is(still not exactly located) it will not result in a 45k cubic meters per second glacier run. So most of the infrastructure beneath the glacier will be intact.

But like I said, it's growing stronger by the minute.

The ash column is at 14km now. And now they've located a second eruption though related to this one a bit to the west.

Oh, and this eruption just proved a theory presented by an Icelandic geologist, Sigurur rarinsson. He stated that after glacier runs(the normal ones) the pressure is relieved off the volcano and that can result in an eruption.

There is and was a glacier run now the last two days and now it is at 3k cubic meters per second.

Here's a (terrible) pic showing where the eruption was '96. The current one is to the left of where it says Grmsfjall.

It also shows where the water goes.

The flight path between Bod in Norway and the centre of of Iceland has been closed. Can probably have an effect on transatlantic air travel.

Latest update:

The delta below Vatnajkull has been closed for traffic overnight. They aren't sure how things will develop overnight and have decided to be overly cautious just to prevent any deaths from this.

The disastrous flood in '96 basically took away all the bridges and the "highway" over the delta and delivered it to the Atlantic ocean. The "highway" and the bridges were built to handle the biggest flood but even so they were torn apart like they were made of matches(Icelandic saying and I don't know if it makes sense in English)

Latest reports say that farmers in north and north-east Iceland have been asked to take their sheep and horses inside for the moment. Too much risk of fluoride poisoning at the moment. People have also been asked to monitor if they see any ash falling and if they do they should report it to the authorities who'll make the decision of whether they should stay inside or be evacuated if that is the case.

They expect the ash to reach northern Norway, Sweden and Finland and perhaps all the way to Russia. But it depends on how the weather develops the next few hours and days.

Sorry, I was certain the "sandur" was an icelandic word.

To make things simple, a "sandur" is a delta formed on land. Typically they are found close to glaciers, as the rivers from theese provide the large amounts of heavy supended materials that is needed to create it.

I've been on a "sandur" here in sweden, there was trees and such growing on it ;-)

A sandur (in the classical meaning of a delta) isn't permanent. The changes to the soil composition, and sometimes, the geomorpholoy is however.

Hehe.

(swiching to the "native" tounge out of courtecy with the rest of the forum if you don't mind )

The Geological faculty at Stockholm university looks like a pretty decent bunch of people from what I've experienced though. So if she wants to do university type of work, that (from what little I've seen) shouldn't be a worry of hers.

I've been trying to tell her that I guess I just have to take her on a trip to Sweden to prove that to her.

A) There is no such thing as 'Sandarnir'. (look at a map to convince youself there)
B) Sandur means sand and never 'delta'.
C) Sands can be anywhere, including deltas, deserts, highlands, lowlands, old ocean basins etc etc
D) I'm right and you're wrong

A) Never driven the southern route? People don't say "g fr Skeiarrsandana" they say "g fr Sandana"

B) The word yes. But Skeiarrsandar can be called a delta. Just take a look at the pic I posted. And then this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_delta

C) Are you talking about the word delta or are you talking about Skeiarrsandur?

D) Absolutely not. Remember the muscle cell argument. I'm always right

Today's update:

The eruption is smaller today than yesterday but still going strong. A cloud of ash has been reported in Sweden where air planes have been restricted to fly under 5000m. They have also handed out warnings for people with asthma and other respiratory diseases. The cloud stretches from northern Sweden all the way down to Stockholm.

The road across the delta/sands has been opened but monitored closely for any changes.

Nothing else worth reporting. Let me know if you want me to post any updates

Thanks, just got our car washed.

Reminds me of all the red snow we got back when Mt. Pinatubo blew up in the Philippines in 91. Any particular color to look for?
