We've seen it too. Where "we" = people other than myself. It's worked perfectly on all my visits, leaving nothing to investigate. We're trying to catch it in the act.

Just got a few here, too... So much traffic? At this time of day? Thought it was mostly a US forum, still.

It appears more when trying to actually post something. You hit 'submit' and you get the server too busy error. It's also hanging on 'submits' and when you click submit again may tell you that you've already posted and immediately taking you to it. For example, I had to post this very statement twice.
Happening more than half the time. I don't think it's a "visiting" thing, but a posting thing.

My guess is that it is the server's 500 error message page, which can be triggered with a process running out of memory, not having enough child processes to serve requests, or a runtime error (PHP, in this case) being triggered. Usually the performance-related causes (when the server would actually be too busy) appear after a timeout, which makes me think it is a runtime issue where the specifics of the error would be logged, since they aren't being output to the browser (i.e. PHP's "display_errors" variable is disabled).
Sorry, I don't mean to play back seat admin to the MacNN admins here, just sharing some of these for those curious and interested in learning about these sorts of things based on my speculation

Speculation welcome, since I still haven't caught it. Another staffer did, server load ~25 ... but only a little over 100 visitors. Either they all loaded a page at the same time, or it's a resource constraint.

Happening lots and lots over here. There's some correlation with posting, but not total.

I just got a vBulletin Database error message...
seemed like an isolated instance, but I would recommend that MacNN staff be advised that this happened as it may reoccur.

Points for an unusually philosophical and obscure complaint. January aside, I think life is still worth living. The tall buildings are not tempting at this time.

Server load ATM is 0.02 - have you noticed any pattern, such as time of day? Or a particular person online whenever it happens?

I hit a short period of "Server too busy" messages on Monday. Forget what time, though.

right now: - wrong server -
I spot-checked yesterday, but as you can see, none of the readings were suspicious. If we can find a pattern to the times, I can kick it to the backend guys and tell them where to look in the logs.

Do you have the ShowIP plugin installed (or equivalent) which shows the server IP you're talking to? MacNN uses a load-balancing system, with two web-facing servers last I checked. I'm currently getting pages from 207.58.150.180 for example.
Since I'm not catching the issue, it might be helpful to note the time and server IP you get the message from. If I kick this to the backend guys to investigate, I've got to have something to give them. At the moment, I've got nada. A few days of time/server overload points would be a start.

reader50: have you tried running iotop or iostat? Running php-fpm and upping its restart frequency (which is great for dealing with memory leaks)? Running mysqltuner? Analyzing the Apache server-status page if you use Apache? Running fail2ban to protect from DDOS attacks?
Just bouncing some ideas off of you guys...

I don't have CLI access on the web servers. But I have caught excessive loads twice now, and have been logging the reports above.
Once we reach 10 instances, I plan to forward it to the server guys.
