I purchased season tickets to the opera for my wife for our tenth wedding anniversary. She really enjoys the opera, but I will need to learn more about it to understand the five shows we will be seeing over the next year.

So, I thought I'd toss this question out there: where to I go to learn more about the specific performances I'll be seeing? Google didn't return very many "good" results. Is there an opera summary book?

Anyone else like the opera?

I'd try to get the libretto beforehand, with translation, of course.
That will help you to get acquainted with the plot.

Here's a start. Just specify the name of each opera and go from there.

For those who don't think much of opera, here's a little crossover that samples the world of opera, the instant celebrity syndrome of today, a rags to riches story and a piece of music that is so good that it can literally bring you to tears to hear it sung.

YouTube - Paul sings Nessun Dorma high quality video/sound

With 10,778,323 views so far, you know this 4:10 long video has something.

Paul Potts' story is delightful and if you are like me, get the Kleenex ready. It's a great moment.

The opera we will be seeing is Un ballo in maschera or The Masked Ball. It was written by Giuseppe Verdi.

I finally figured out that a libretto is the full text of the opera. Now I just need to find a copy . . .

I wonder if iTunes carries the full CD of this opera?

You should be able to find it online, the text is public domain, so no copyright issues here.

Summary can be found here: Un ballo in maschera - Verdi

I did just buy the Paul Potts CD from England. Admittedly my exposure to opera is limited.

So much so that I wrote a review on iTunes.
