Yesterday I joined my friend's wedding. I have to say the maid of honor is more beautiful than the bride. Out of courtesy, I still said to the bride "Wow, you are absolutely the most beautiful lady today. Congratulations!" Am I disingenuous? What could I say to make it better? Do you ever have similar experience?

My knee-jerk response is a wedding should be an exhibition, not a competition.

It's the bride's day. Everybody else is just there to set the stage. Behave accordingly.

I guess it depends on the couple.

For even thinking it, you're kind of a jerk and not a great friend. If you had told the bride the bridesmaid was prettier, you'd be 10 times a jerk and a horrible friend. So, what does this say about you?

So you're saying I'm lying when I want my partner to be as involved in the wedding planning and execution as I am.
No, it really does depend on the couple. Not every bride is a selfish bitch.

Not sure how this makes it "the groom's day" if you recruit him to be involved...
The bridesmaids are involved in the wedding planning and execution. It's not their day.
The in-laws are involved in the wedding planning and execution.
The family is involved in the wedding planning and execution. It's not their day.

We solved this problem by only inventing people who were less attractive than us to our wedding.

I'd say it's "the couple's day" more than anything else. I realize women care more than men about dresses and flowers and whatnot, but marriage takes two people to accomplish.

In the strictest sense of the word, what you said was disingenuous. Is it traditional in your culture to tell the bridge that she is the most beautiful lady in attendance? If not, would it have been equally complimentary to the bridge to simply say that she was incredibly beautiful?

But YOU want him to do that.
He'll go along and make it his party, too, but it's still your day.

That's an overly selfish view of it.
I'm not going to view my wedding day as MY day. It's OUR day. If he's legitimately only going along with the wedding because it's "my day" and not because he's just as excited as I am about getting married and sharing that with our close friends, he's the wrong person for me.

My daughter got married back in May. As much as her fiancee was involved in the decisions and planning (and he was very involved), it still was pretty much her day. He was very excited about everything, but even he acknowledged that this was her show.

Hm.
I'm way more interested in the afterparty than the ceremony, anyhow.

How, exactly, do you determine the gender of a bridge?

If you cross it and it withholds sex, it's a girl.

Bridges are male, tunnels are female.
