ok, i'm having a really odd issue. the finder buttons on my computer apparently have a dark side and aren't afraid of showing it. allow me to explain with pictures.

when i hit "use small icons" in the prefs, or unhit it, the buttons return to normal. like this:


however, the instant i touch them, they begin to look like this:


what's going on?
