Hello all you super smart Mac gurus out there... I have a question about an external drive I want to add. But I wanted to make sure it will work. I know Firewire has changed recently, as far as speeds, or am I wrong on this. Any help would be great.

as long as the hard drive you're getting doesn't say that it's "Firewire800", you'll be fine

Well, FireWire 800 is backwards-compatible, so it will work on a TiBook, but you won't get any benefit, and it'll cost more.

Different shaped plug. Though most Firewire 800 drives ship with a 400 port as well, you can't go direct from an 800 out to a 400 in on the compy.

But yes, you just want Firewire 400.

Yes, but the important thing to note is that it's backward compatible. You'd just use a FW800 to FW400 cable. It's not incompatible.

Sure you can, just use the correct cable or plug adapter, as new newton said. You just won't get FireWire 800 speeds that way.
